DIY hand sanitizer with essential oils
If you were the type to go to bath and body works to purchase hand sanitizers for you, your family and friends, well, you are not alone, I was definitely guilty of it.
Actually, to be quite frank with you, I was huge purchaser of anything bath and body works until I started looking at their ingredients.
I knew that it couldn’t be great things because I was aware that it had fragrance but then I realized that they still used some big NO NO’s ingredients such as ALPHA-ISOMETHYL IONONE which has been linked to being a human immune system toxicant or allergen and Butylphenyl methylpropional which has been deemed not safe for human health.
Since then I stopped buying their hand sanitizers too and decided to start making my own. So, when this whole coronavirus epidemic blew up I already had all the ingredients I needed at home to make my own hand sanitizer.
Believe it or not, it’s super easy too! Even after this virus goes away and all stores have hand sanitizers in stock again, I’m pretty sure you won’t go back to buying it again.
DIY Hand Sanitizer: Lotion
Here’s what you will need:
2/3 cup of Rubbing Alcohol
1/3 cup of Aloe Vera Gel
5 drops of Rosemary Essential Oil
5 drops of Eucalyptus Essential Oil
Directions:
1 — Mix the alcohol and aloe vera in a container
2 — Add the essential oils of your preference ( Depending on the potency of your essential oils you may need more or you may need less, I am using DoTerra oils for this specific recipe) and mix it well.
3 — Add hand sanitizer mixture to desired container. I used a mini portable travel 30 ML bottle.
Here’s why I decided to use Rosemary and Eucalyptus
Eucalyptus contains properties that are antibacterial, anticatarrhal, anti-infectious, anti-inflammatory and antiviral. Its common primary uses varies from cooling down the body as well as influenza, inflammation, pneumonia, respiratory viruses, coughs, congestions amongst other uses.
Rosemary is also antibacterial, anticatarrhal, anti-infectious, anti-inflammatory, antiviral as well as an antioxidant and anticancer. The powerful herb is known to aid in the cases of cholera, influenza, inflammation, cancer and also serve as a detoxification tool.
Now, if you’d rather have a hand sanitizer spray rather than in lotion form all you have to do is remove the aloe vera and replace it with distilled water and coconut oil.
DIY Hand Sanitizer: Spray
Here’s what you will need:
2/3 cup of Rubbing Alcohol
1/3 cup of distilled water
2 spoons of Pure, Unrefined & Cold pressed coconut oil
5 drops of Rosemary Essential Oil
5 drops of Eucalyptus Essential Oil
In this recipe coconut oil is being used to keep the skin hydrated and moisturized as alcohol can dry it out. Keep in mind the acronym P.U.C. when purchasing coconut oil, which stands for Pure, Unrefined & Cold pressed.
Directions:
1 — Mix the alcohol, water and coconut oil and mix it well.
2 — Add the essential oils of your preference and mix it well.
3 — Add hand sanitizer mixture to desired container. In this case I used a 4 oz amber glass spray bottle.
Keep in mind that there are many other essential oils that also carry antiviral properties and can used in this recipe. For example, On Guard blend from DoTerra which has been scientifically proven to attenuates influenza viruses such as the PR8, is also a great option, and oregano and melaleuca also has antiviral properties and can be used in combination.
